Footprints

Behind the scenes of our sustainability journey

Shaun Russell portrait

There is a tremendous difference between thinking you do good for the world, and actually doing it.

We found that out first hand when we developed our newest product collection. We wanted to create a collection with a lighter footprint but we didn’t realise how complicated that task would be. As soon as you look into sustainability and business, you discover that nothing is as simple as it seems.

Our journey to sustainability took us through mountains of misinformation, a mire of contradictory regulations and a multitude of disconnected viewpoints on responsibility overall. But we simply weren’t willing to ignore the complications and look for a simple answer.

Instead, we have replaced our entire product collection from the ground up, documenting our decision-making along the way. There’s still a distance left to travel, but I hope it can be useful for those also wishing to leave a lighter footprint.

Shaun Russell, founder

Footprint 1: Do you know what you’re burning?

Our journey to finding the right candle wax base has taken us around the world and back, and revealed some uncomfortable secrets beneath the surface.

Footprint 2: Glass v Plastic. Good v Bad?

In packaging, plastic is currently public enemy number one while glass avoids the spotlight. We use both, we’ve measured both, and the truth wasn’t at all what we expected.

Footprint 3: When is a cosmetic product truly organic?

When lack of regulation, industry definitions, optional certification, marketing and misinformation combine, the result can be confusion that is bad for both soil and skin.

Footprint 4: Are your heroes also fake?

When we created our first cosmetic collection we followed the familiar path of focusing on an exotic hero ingredient to make it appear more authentic. We’re not proud of the result.

Footprint 5: Is natural nirvana?

In today’s cosmetics world, natural is nirvana. More recently it can be dressed up inside fancier names like green, clean, or conscious beauty. But there are a few things about nature that don’t always make it the best option. For your skin, or for the nature itself.
