Finding Stillness in the North with Leena Henningsen

Leena & dog

There’s a certain kind of silence you only find far from everything. High up north, surrounded by whispering pines and endless skies, filmmaker and photographer @leena.henningsen has found hers. A small red cabin in the forest has become her sanctuary — a place where time slows, and the pace of the world fades into the background.

“Sometimes it’s just so necessary to get away from it all,” she says.

“To a place where you don’t need to perform or function. A place that doesn’t expect anything from you — where you can just be yourself and let go for a little while.”

Here, the rhythm of the day is set by the seasons. The scent of wood smoke lingers in the air. Light filters through tall trees. Even the quiet seems to speak.

A quiet ritual

When the temperature drops and the forest turns crisp, Leena leans into small, familiar rituals. Lighting candles. Brewing coffee slowly. Wrapping herself in wool.

“The new fragrance of Skandinavisk called STUGA is the perfect companion for some cosy cabin days,” she shares. "It fills the room with a scent of birch bark, woodland mosses, nutmeg and incense. I truly love their scents — they capture the spirit and feeling of the North beautifully and also fit so well in our new home.”

The glow of a flame. The soft scent of birch and moss. A quiet evening, stretching out in no hurry at all.

Nordic rhythms

In Leena’s world, nothing is staged. The cabin breathes with the forest. Mornings begin with coffee and candlelight. Evenings are wrapped in blankets, the wind outside pressing against the walls.

Through her lens, Leena captures what so many seek — a simpler kind of beauty, rooted in stillness and the quiet company of nature.

The scent that lingers becomes part of the place itself. Notes of birch bark, moss and spice weave into the air, folding into the rhythm of the cabin — a quiet reflection of life in the North.
